Goodbye, 2017

To celebrate the coming year, I've rounded up my top 10 moments of 2017... Are you ready m'dears?! Buckle up, here we go in chronological order...

ONE... THE HUBS' BIRTHDAY! Hosting 21 friends and family members in our tiny house for the Hubs' belated golden birthday dinner. And don't forget Julia Child's beef bourguignon and Momofuku Milk Bar's Birthday Layer Cake both from scratch!
TWO... JAPAN! Our adventure included the southern islands, Kyoto and Tokyo to boot! Eeek! This little country truly stole our hearts. I promise a write up for Kyoto and Tokyo is in the works.
THREE... PORTLAND! I gushed about our Portland weekend here, need I say more?!
FOUR... INN AT LITTLE WASHINGTON! Easily our top meal of the year. The price is steep but every morsel pure genius! Perfect for a special occasion like celebrating turning 32
FIVE... WE'RE HAVING A BABY! Can you believe it?! This spring we're expecting our first baby and we couldn't be more thrilled!! Get the back story here...
SIX... WESTPORT! Our annual pilgrimage to the Hubs' family's cottage is always a highlight. Does anything beat lobster and the beach? Especially when pregnant?!
SEVEN... GRAY MALIN! Pinch me! Can you believe our baby's first celebrity was Gray Malin?! The Hubs and I have adored Gray's work for years so getting to meet him almost made me faint.
EIGHT... MEAN GIRLS, THE MUSICAL! Tina Fey's latest work is pure magic, truly a must see!

NINE... IT'S A BOY! Finding out we're having a little dude has us dreaming of all things boy. We're almost ready for the room reveal but here's a sneak peek...
TEN... CHRISTMAS IN MONTANA! This year being home for the holidays was extra special. For the first time in nearly a decade all the cousins were reunited which now includes spouses and kids too. Family time is just what the doctor ordered!

Now... who's ready for 2018?!

Weekend Musings

EATING // Constantly. My appetite is something to reckon with these days. I really need to start keeping healthy snacks on hand, otherwise the potato chips and cookies I've been eating are sure to instigate more heart burn.

HOME*WORK // We're diligently continuing to make progress on Baby Fenn's nursery. With everything but the crib ordered or in hand, we have a good start and just need to finish painting (hopefully this weekend) and get the ceiling light fixture hung - waaahooo! Can't wait to post photos, so keep it here!

CRUSHING ON // All things Christmas. Maybe it's the hormones but I am all about the holidays this year. Our tree and wreath were up the day after Thanksgiving, too soon?! With Christmas tunes constantly blaring nonstop, I do hope the Hubs doesn't tire and follows my enthusiasm.

READING // After taking a walk down memory lane with Katy Tur's Unbelievable about the Trump campaign, I was ready for something a little more fun. I've picked up Megan Miranda's All the Missing Girls and although it was initially off to a slow start, it has quickly become quite the page turner. So what should I read next? Please send me your recs ASAP, dear readers!

THANKFUL FOR // Big Little Lies... Season TWO! Eeek! I'm happy to hear HBO will again be heavily relying on the book's smart writer Liane Moriarty. Reese and Nicole have confirmed their return as well - thank GAHD! Who's ready for the return of big houses, clothes to envy and glam?! I know I am!

THINKING ABOUT // Tomorrow I'm officially 24 weeks pregnant, which means our boy is at least the size of a cantaloupe! Can you believe it?! Baby Fenn is growing fast, big and strong AND continues to be ahead of schedule in the 77th percentile. I hope he remembers his mommy is quite small...!!!

WATCHING // The Crown on Netflix. My goodness, could timing be better for a new season of this beautifully layered show with the announcement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's engagement?! Such excitement for ALL the Brits, my English roots are celebrating!

WEARING // These suede platform slip-ons from Vince on repeat. Preggers swelling is for real and my feet need these sneakers to keep happy. Thankfully they're quite cute and remind me of the Spice Girls but are a bit more muted. Is it time for you to snag a pair and "SPICE UP YOUR LIFE"?! Obviously... duh!!

A Boy's Room

The last few weeks, the Hubs and I have started to clear out our once home office to create a nursery for our baby BOY coming this spring. That's right folks, we're having a boy and we could not be more excited!

Taking on the nursery, I knew I wanted to keep it simple, modern and gender neutral with a few pops of fun and color. And after scouring the internet, finding inspiration from my favorite home decor magazine (Domino) and talking at length with my Hubby - we came up with a pretty clear plan. First, we're keeping the room soft and cozy by painting the room with Benjamin Moore's "Edgecomb Gray." Next, we'll hang a small George Nelson Bubble Saucer for lighting with a dimmer. We scored the light fixture during Lumen's annual sale and one of my GFs who recently had a baby said the dimmer is a must. I'm taking that advice to the bank!

As far as the foundation of the room, the furniture we've chosen will grow with our baby into boyhood and beyond. We already had this beautiful Room & Board bookcase (on loan from aunt Niks!) and used this piece as a jumping off point. The Eames Molded Rocker was a no brainer and there are plenty of good replicas to avoid the steep price of an original. I've adored DwellStudio's mid-century modern dressers for almost a decade and they have an easy changing table topper to make this piece both beautiful and functional. The crib was probably the hardest decision but guided by Baby Bargains (thanks Jill!), we found the Stokke Sleepi made the most sense for our current digs as this crib quite literally does it all. From bassinet to crib to toddler bed and finally to two chairs, we couldn't pass up this stylish and smart unit that boasts functionality for city dwellers and those in small spaces.

Once we'd identified furniture, lighting and the paint color, the decor came together quickly. I love the  straight forward message of print-maker Anthony Burrill, "Work hard & be nice to people." I also love that these words may inspire our little man to be just like his dad. Because we love animals you know these mounted zebra and lion heads from Serena & Lily really set my heart a flutter and will give the room a little flare. Plus there is no way these zoo creatures won't go on sale before April, I mean hello Christmas/Black Friday sales. The mirror is an Ikea piece that I've thought about more than I'd like to admit so I'm tickled to finally have it hang in our house. Although DC can be a buttoned up city, I've found so much inspiration in the Calder sculptures and mobiles scatter around town. Which is why when I came across this mobile, my immediate answer was YES!

Now for ALL the details: George Nelson Bubble Saucer Light | Room & Board Copenhagen Bookcase | Serena & Lily Mounted Lion Head | Serena & Lily Mounted Zebra Head | Eames Inspired Rocker | Work Hard & Be Nice to People Print | Softsquare Ottoman | Stokke Sleepi Crib | Life and Thread Mobile | Ikea Stockholm Mirror | DwellStudio Mid-Century 3 Drawer French White Dresser | Container Store Ivory Braided Jute Rectangular Basket | DWR Restore Felt Basket | Bien Fait Animals Wallpaper

Staycation

I see London, I see France?! The Hubs and I were set to Babymoon in Paris for six days but unfortunately I'm experiencing a few minor complications with my pregnancy and must continue on moderated bedrest - sigh! But to make the cancelation a smidge more bearable, we are taking a mini staycation the next couple of days. Here's what's on tap...

* A much needed manicure and pedicure (don't worry, I've got my Chanel and prego safe nail polish remover!)
* The newly renovated Presidential Portraits at the Smithsonian's American Art Museum's National Portrait Gallery.
* All the movies... Well at least... Battle of the Sexes, Murder on the Orient Express and Marshall.
* Le Diplomate on repeat... Our early dinner game will be strong with all the escargot, beef bourguignon and moules frites we can handle!
* Progress on the baby room. A few weeks back, we started to clear out our old home office to welcome our new baby but we are still far from finished.
* The Art of French Cooking. Now the temperature has dropped, a recipe from Julia Child's iconic French cooking book seems most appropriate!

Au Revoir... for now! *

Weekday Musings... Halloween Edition

EATING // All the Reese's Halloween Peanut Butter Pumpkins! You guys, have you noticed how these morsels are more delicious than the original peanut butter cups?! It must be the chocolate-peanut butter ratio... Whatever it is... I just can't get enough!

HOME*WORK // We picked up this spooky little tabletop tree to add to our Halloween decor and are in total love!

CRUSHING ON // The houses from HBO's Big Little Lies are hauntingly beautiful... And their price tags are sure to give you a fright! If you swooned over Madeline's, Renata's or Celeste's luxurious homes as much as I did, click here for a dose of reality.

READING // Want to get your thrills from a book? I highly recommend these five nail biters... The Woman in Cabin 10, Truly Madly Guilty, Sharp Objects, The Girl on the Train, Luckiest Girl Alive...

THANKFUL FOR // Now I live in the city (remember those country road Montana roots...), I especially love Halloween because of the hundreds of little tots and kiddos who ring our bell as trick-or-treaters.

THINKING ABOUT // But do we have enough candy?! We trekked out to Target this weekend and purchased 5 giant bags of sweets for our trick-or-treaters but I worry we will run out again this year and be met with looks of disappointment. Is there anything worse than a kid donned in a giraffe, a cowboy or a bee costume with a bottom lip tremble?!

WATCHING // Netflix's Stranger Things is back with Season 2 and I promise it doesn't disappoint! There's no denying this 80s sci-fi thriller will have you shaking in your boots one moment and laughing the next. Now please go binge so we can discuss!

WEARING // Today's the day... What are you waiting for? The Hubs and I hit the town this weekend as astronauts ready for blast off. The jumpsuits, conveniently purchased at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, were comfy and fit just right. And of course I added an element of surprise with a cut out alien attached to my belly... Say it with me, "we have an alien on board!" #18weeks and counting!

Now go scare someone with a BOO and have a SPOOKTACULAR day!!

The Pregs Essentials

Now that I'm well into my second trimester, I wanted to share a few items that have been keeping me on the up and up...

TYLENOL EXTRA STRENGTH // I've always been loyal to Aleve for headaches but Tylenol is one of the only pain relievers doctors recommend while pregnant. And my first trimester included some gnarly headaches so you know this stuff is on my bedside table just in case.

KIND BARS // Always! You never know when you are going to be hungry and I got seriously ill during my first trimester if my stomach was close to empty. Popping a few Kind Bars in my bag has been a simple and easy solution.

TATA HARPER'S CLARIFYING MASK // One thing you hear during pregnancy is that your hormones can cause some heavy breakouts. Three years ago when I got off birth control for the first time in 15 plus years, I broke out like crazy. You guys! It was so bad, I sometimes confined myself to our house. To arm myself in our new journey, I did some research and learned that Tata Harper's products are ALL safe during pregnancy. Not sure I could believe what I had found on the web, I contacted Tata's team directly and they promptly replied and said this was 100% true because there are no toxins, GMOs, fillers, artificial colors, artificial fragrances or synthetic chemicals in any of their products. Winning! Now I use Tata's clarifying mask once a week and afterwards I swear my skin feels so smooth, I may just give our new baby a run for their money in the soft skin department!

WATER BOTTLE // Something I have definitely noticed is my increased thirst for water. I carry this S'Well water bottle with me everywhere and love that it's lightweight and can keep water cold for 24 hours, although I'm constantly refilling it.

MATERNITY CLOTHING // Finding maternity wear has been more challenging than expected, especially as most stores don't carry their maternity lines in-store. Thank goodness for free shipping and returns because otherwise this mama-to-be would be out some serious cash! I've had some luck with Old Navy and Banana Republic, which is great because they're relatively cheap, but my favorite pieces I've picked up thus far are from Storq and Hatch. Storq's basic dresses and tanks are a must. Storq uses thicker material, which is great and their pieces don't come with gimmicks like side-ruching. (Don't get me wrong, ruching can be cute sometimes but for everything in your closet - yuck!) I've only bought leggings from Hatch during their "Friends & Family" sale as their collection is very pricey but again the fit is right and they're way better quality. Plus both Storq and Hatch brag that their pieces can be worn before, during and after pregnancy so maybe I'm saving money in the long run?

LETSCOM FITNESS TRACKER // Like clockwork, as soon as I cleared my first trimester, I instantly got all my energy back and was ready to hit the gym. Many doctors advise keeping your heart rate below 150 beats per minute so I picked up this fitness tracker to give me peace of mind. Best $30 I've spent because now I can get back into my workout routine and know my limits. This wristband also keeps track of my mileage. And much to the Hubs' dismay, I've added an evening walk to our routine to hit my goal of walking five miles a day! :)

IMMACULATE CANNED CINNAMON ROLLS // It's like I'm back in college... OMG I love these cinnamon rolls so freaking much! Although I normally don't have a sweet tooth, these baked little goodies make me smile from ear to ear. I mean we are buying them from Whole Foods and they are organic which means they're better than the Pillsbury version right?!

NIKE AIR MAX // You're probably tired of hearing about these shoes but seriously now that I've increased my daily mileage, I couldn't live without them.

CHANEL NAIL POLISH // There are some nail polishes to absolutely avoid during pregnancy but there are also many nail polishes that are free from the toxic chemicals that may hurt baby - DBP (dubutyl phthalate), toluene and formaldehyde.  Happily my favorite long wear nail colour, Chanel, is totally fine. And I snagged this soy nail polish remover from Priti NYC that is also a safer choice for baby.

LEACHCO SNOOGLE // Before pregnancy, I was a belly sleeper. But sleeping on your stomach gets uncomfortable real quick once your baby is sprouting. I ordered this body pillow to help keep me on my left side (optimal for not putting weight on your organs too!) This thing is for real and literally is like adding another human to our already small queen bed but it is here to stay at least for the next 6 months plus...

MUSTELA STRETCH MARK PREVENTION CREAM // After reading several reviews, I picked up this lotion to avoid the potential long-term effects of pregnancy. It's thick and feels nice but we just started our relationship so I'll keep you posted about how it ends up working.

Any mamas out there with other recommendations to keep me sane and safe? I'm all ears!

Our BIG Announcement

Remember when I mentioned, I underwent a minor surgery? Whelp it just so happens there were two minor surgeries and it was all in the name of the Hubs and I building our family. We are beyond excited to share that our Woodley will be a big brother to a real life little human this spring! April first to be exact and it's no joke! But wait, how did we get here?!

The road has been LONG. After exhausting natural options, we went to Shady Grove Fertility to educate ourselves on a path forward. We started with three rounds of IUI and then after recognizing we needed to take further action, signed up for our first cycle of IVF.

You guys, IVF is serious business! Timing shots morning and night with personal and work travel was beyond challenging and before we learned about pre-icing, the shots were undeniably painful! Could it be more complicated? YES! The mixing of the medicine before injection? Thank goodness my partner in crime is ever steady and charming with a needle - I mean neither of us is a doctor or nurse! But after a few trials and errors, we were ready to retrieve and freeze my eggs.

And although cycle one of IVF did not take, we were confident and signed up for round two immediately because of the A-Team behind us: Dr. Devine, our coordinating nurse Morgan, our families and our dearest friends who asked questions, supplied hugs and were always there with kind words of encouragement. We knew it was a matter of time because science, people... SCIENCE! It's incredible what doctors are able to do these days and we knew that however messy the process got, we would have our own baby when the timing was right and always have love and support.

The Hubs' mom gets a special shout out here. Without hesitation, she flew down from their summer cottage in Massachusetts when we figured out the Hubs would be away during my next embryo transfer. From the morning of to the evening, she stayed with me, made sure I was fed and watered (including my fav ginger cookies from Whole Foods!) and steady again on my feet after anesthesia. Literally she's a lifesaver and does it with such style and flare!

And now as my belly grows more by the day, we are so very thankful and CANNOT WAIT to meet our baby! Keep it here for regular updates...

Weekday ...(ALMOST Weekend)... Musings

EATING // Fall soups on repeat. Although the District's heat is unrelenting despite the newly arrived season, I can't help but pull out some of our cold weather favorites like butternut squash soup and Ina Garten's easy tomato soup! There's nothing that beats soup as a comfort food. Go ahead, challenge me!

HOME*WORK // Are you tired of having your mailbox stuffed to the brim with catalogs you never signed up for? I know I am! Although I recycle, I still feel guilty from all the unnecessary waste my loyal postal service delivers. Start your own catalog diet by signing up for Catalog Choice and opt out of the catalogs you never wanted.

CRUSHING ON // All the sweaters! Much like my love song to soup, I can't wait to layer on cozy sweaters. Chunky and soft, cashmere and wool! Please weather gods, it's FALL and by gahhhd it's time to "Make it work!"

READING // There is no denying Reese Witherspoon has a sharp eye for a good book and because we already had devoured so many of her recommended page-turners, my BFF Katie and I have pledged our loyalty to the #RWBookClub. Our first book we're reading together? The Alice Network by Kate Quinn... And you guys! This fast-paced fictional story with strong female leads is a must read! There is no doubt this book is headed for the big screen so you better start reading now!

THANKFUL FOR // Woodley. There are no buts about it, our faithful pup makes our life so much fuller. And his heart is SO BIG! Maybe too big, if that's possible?! Recently on one of our daily constitutionals at the Congressional Cemetery (yes, there is a dog walking program, promise!), we shortly crossed paths with our occasional pet sitter John and his dog Marley. Woodley immediately ran to John and Marley with a big smile and lots of wagging. It melted our hearts! Who doesn't want their dog to adore their caregiver? Given it was a workday, we were short on time so after a quick hello we continued our walk. That's when the chaos ensued. At a full sprint, our boy kept running the distance between us and John until his beloved friend left the park. Dare I say Woodley was a little heart broken? What are we to do as fur parents to help ease his worry? And I am admittedly jealous!

THINKING ABOUT // The 10 Kardashians that will soon be 13 - gahhh! Can you believe Khloe, Kim and Kylie are pregs?! My head is still spinning... If we're not careful, KUWTK is sure to last another decade or more!

WATCHING // Eeeek! Fall TV is back and we are fully indulging... Mindy Project, This is Us, Modern Family and to the Hubs' dismay Grey's Anatomy! We also stumbled upon HBO's Deuce and are totally captivated. James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal sparkle as they tell the story of America's budding sex industry. The show has already locked in a second season, so buckle up and get watching!

WEARING // I'm obsessed with these Nike Air Max sneaks and boy are they made for walking! I've happily retired my Nike Juvenates for these babies and relish in their daily support and extra cush. If you're a Nike loyalist like me, check these tennis shoes out STAT!

Life by Design

August and the first half of September were real whirlwinds with the Hubs and I both on the move. We stayed in Montana for almost two weeks and my heart couldn't stop swooning over the familiar old western street signs and crisp dry air (of course, when the wildfire smoke didn't get in the way!!) We snuck in a day trip to Yellowstone, which I've frequented since I was a tot. That place is still magic and everyone needs it on their bucket list. Is your pencil out yet?

We then headed back to DC for the work week but were back out West for a short but memorable wedding weekend of two very dear friends in Denver, Colorado. Before the wedding festivities, we brunched with a fellow GirlBoss and her daughter at the Denver Central Market, where I'm 100% positive I ate the best breakfast burrito to date. For real! The chorizo, egg, potato and green chili ratio must be a secret of science.

Knowing our schedules were a little hectic when we landed back in the District, I snagged an early weekday reservation at the Dabney to ensure the Hubs and I took a moment. And you guys! This restaurant is such a gem, it's one you can't miss. The food, decor and people were on point and I was fully delighted by the sneak entrance through the alley. The Dabney is the perfect date night but would also be great for visiting friends and family. And it was #22 on my 101 in 1001...

Pre-Fall Edit '17

RW BOOK CLUB // I've joined Reese Witherspoon's book club cult! I swear this woman knows how to pick the next thriller and she says Little Fires Everywhere moved her to tears! Good enough for me, it's time to AmazonPrime!

VERONICA BEARD BASIC // I'm obsessed with everything from this American sportswear brand. And although the price tags are steep, it's easy to find great sales on this women led clothing line on multiple websites. Each piece is made to be versatile and classic with a hint of bohemian and is high quality. I'm keeping a close watch on this Schoolboy Jacket with the Hoodie Dickey as it's clearly a perfect addition to my fall wardrobe.

IKEA PENDANT LAMP // This cozy "sinnerlig" light is only $59.99 and a total stunner! Perfect for a family room, entry or a little bambino - I know we'll find a place for this pendant in our home.

3.1 PHILLIP LIM MINI BUCKET BAG // I picked up this little bag for our trip to Japan and have been carrying it nonstop. It's the perfect size to hold just the essentials for a day out and about.

CHEETAH CARD SET // Even if the temperature is starting to get cooler you can keep it wild with this little card set from Mac & Murphy. And in case you're totally paper obsessed like me and already thinking about your 2018 wall calendar... this one is a keeper!

TATA HARPER CLARIFYING MASK // This tiny pot of magic has been added to my weekly beauty routine and it's non-toxic and all natural to boot! I love that it tingles so you can feel it working and you know it's getting the bad stuff!

TURN TABLE // I love this modern coffee table with extra storage capacity for your remotes, matchbooks and more - its simple lines make my heart sing!

NIKE AIR MAX // These shoes were made for walking and I can't wait to put some miles on 'em!

Thirty Two

August has almost come and gone but during these past few weeks, I had time to turn 32...!! You guys... THIRTY TWO, can you believe it?!  Taking a page out of my mother-in-law's book, the Hubs and I celebrated with "a day of Whitney" which entailed rolling around on my sweet new cruiser bike (thanks Hubs!), crab cakes and malasadas (Hawaiian style Portuguese doughnuts), a quick trip to the National Gallery to finally get my photo with Katharina Fritch's giant blue rooster and a spectacular mouth watering dinner at the Inn at Little Washington (#13 on my 101 list). My cup is so full and I have to say 32 feels just right. How do you celebrate birthdays? Any traditions? Please do tell, I'm all ears and I've missed you!!

Life by Design

Work has been busy busy and has us excited for our upcoming travels to Massachusetts and Montana!  We're even more elated to escape the heat... DC summers are no joke and with a heat index nearing triple digits, it's time to get out and save ourselves!

But staying indoors in the A/C has lead to some new discoveries... like new paper goods from Constellation & Co. (thanks Paulo!) and P.S. Snacks' cookie dough. Although the texture is not quite there, the taste is good enough to satisfy your sweets craving and its chalk full of the good stuff like chickpeas, almonds and coconut oil. Ready to indulge with a clean conscience? Pick up this healthy snack at Union Kitchen Grocery and SHOP LOCAL (!!!)

My day job includes several Capitol Hill fly-ins. This time our participants were guests at the new and trendy Pod Hotel in Chinatown. The Pod is attached to the Crimson Diner + Whiskey Bar. I still haven't tried this little gem's food and drink but their space (pictured above) is g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s and was the perfect place to take a minute before hitting Member offices.

Weekday Musings

EATING // Last week for a GF's birthday, we headed to dinner at the Garrison (#24 on my 101 in 1001 list). The poppyseed gougeres are a can't miss. We loved the chicken liver parfait with pickled strawberries too! The service was divine and the ambiance romantic (all be it a bit too dark). Most of the meal was pretty heavy though so go hungry!

HOME*WORK // Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference. As such, I bought this table fan for our kitchen and it is b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l! We've had it plugged in and on low ever since it arrived home and it is making these 90 plus degree days a little more bearable.

CRUSHING ON // Wide leg linen pants and jumpsuits. I'm more of a loose fitted dress girl these days but something about this trend has got me curious. My BF KTB rocks both styles and now I'm headed into my almost mid-thirties (GAHHH) it feels like it's now or never.  I'm obsessed with these Mara Hoffman striped pants and this Reformation jumpsuit in particular... Thoughts?

READING // I'm a third of the way through Into the Water and just like Gone Girl it's got me uneasy so I'm reading this one quick! It's the perfect thriller for the beach or a lazy day inside with the A/C and I can't wait to have all the pieces fall into place.

THANKFUL FOR // Bae's family. They always say when you marry, you marry your partner's family too and for me... THANK goodness!! I've had two minor surgeries the last couple of months and the hubs's parents have been there for us every step of the way. We love them to pieces and never will be able to thank them enough. I hope to say more about the surgeries at a later date but let's just let that be for now.

THINKING ABOUT // Portland. You guys! I still can't get our trip out of my head, ICYMI check it out here!

WATCHING // "The Big Sick" is easily the best romcom we've seen this year and dare I say ever?!?! Kumail Nanjiani plays himself opposite Zoe Kazan in this box office summer hit with a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. My review? I sobbed for at least an hour - some happy tears and admittedly some sad tears - because it's that good. Thank gahd my hubby is one patient man and doesn't embarrass easily. Can someone please pass me a tissue? Just thinking about this movie again gets me mushy!

WEARING // My summer perfume... AKA bug spray! I'm terribly allergic to mosquitos so it's bug spray for me every single day. In fact, I never leave the house without it! I've found a few DEET-free options that do the job: Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard (this comes in an individual towelette version too that's great for travel/hiking), All Terrain's Herbal Armor (you may smell like citronella but there are worst smells) and Naked Botanicals' Lavender Insect Repellent (easily the best smelling and made in DC too!). Do you have any tricks? I'm all ears!

Sandals Edit '17

Newly painted bright colored toes deserve to be seen! Here's a quick roundup of eight sandals I'm currently coveting...

Carrie Forbes Fati Raffia Slides // These little sandals have been a internet sensation and seem to be on all my favorite blogs. If it weren't for the price tag - I'd be getting down with the hype and a willing participant! #IfIWereARichGirl

Loeffler Randall (LR) Lucia Studded Knot Slide // This beauty comes with a steep price tag too but the best part of LR, is they have awesome sales... so hold onto your hats, ladies and gents - you might just get lucky!

Carmelinas Lulu Two Band Slides in Raffia // Rattan is everything this season and I'm not going to protest... not even for a second!

Marais USA St. Tropez in Lavender // I first came across this brand via my girl at Oh Joy! I tried them on at Need Supply and have been in major girl crush zone ever since... I mean this lavender color really makes me swoon!

Soludos Knotted Slide // I have a few pair of Soludos loafers but none of their sandals. I love the simplicity of this pair and if they're anywhere near as comfortable as their other shoes... Cha-cha-ching, that's me adding these little puppies to my Nordstrom cart!

Loeffler Randall Rubie Sandal // Currently on sale these rainbow suede slides make my heart smile! And LR means quality that will last!

Ancient Greek Sandals Thais // This basic could be perfect for everyday. And couldn't nubuck pink be a new neutral?!

Jack Rogers Palm Beach // Your "Basic B*tch" favorite, I can't help but still love these little sandals. They are such a great everyday slide and last FOREVER, no matter the beating they take. But their sorority girl familiarity sometimes makes me want to gag...!

A Portland Weekend

My cup is FULL. After a long weekend away with some of my closest friends in Portland, Oregon, returning to the District has been more than a challenge. Being with your people makes it impossible not to smile from ear to ear. So to keep us in dreamland, here are a few must dos from the City of Roses...

+ FOOD

Mid-meal at Tusk... Obviously we were all over it.
Brunch at Broder Nord. I mean the baked eggs, open faced sandwiches and hash were all spot on. The cherry on top- what I can only describe as light dough balls dipped in lemon curd. Need evidence? Click here.

Lunch at Matt's BBQ. No photos of the food but trust these smiles, get the ribs! The meat literally falls off the bone... GAHHH!

Dinner at Tusk. A fresh take on vegetables, this meal will leave you craving more and more while also feeling happily fed with only the good stuff. Chef Joshua McFadden is no joke! The cocktails are damn delicious too!

+ GOODS

Still drooling over Spartan's photo and pottery display (photo by Paulo Palugod, bestie and Instagram star!)
Frances May. This clothing boutique is a blend of Tuckernuck and Need Supply that suits me perfectly. Thank goodness for no sales tax!

School House Electric. Checking out this store was a no brainer. I've been obsessed for years and getting to see all the goods in-person was true heaven.

Spartan Shop. Just stepping into this store takes your breath away. The curated home goods housed in this store are thoughtful, clearly hand-picked and individually made. Every last good is laid out for a perfect display, which you know gets this girl grinning. Such order should be adopted by the world, people! The WORLD!

WM Goods. This little shop had hosted an event the prior night and the leftover flowers were alluring and highlighted the paper goods, small pottery and women's assortment of linen. Totally swoon worthy and what dreams are made of.

+ ACTIVITIES

Baby potatoes with fava beans + cucumber, celery, apricot and pistachio salad (from Tusk Chef's cookbook: Six Seasons) + sausage + lamb ribs... All meat and produce via the Farmers Market - too good (OY!) Photo again by Mr. Paulo P.
Park Avenue Wines. We were guests at this little wine shop for a Krug Champagne tasting paired with fried chicken and caviar. With a combination like that, it's impossible to not leave an impression.  Especially when Bullard is handling the food. Bullard is "one of the most anticipated restaurants opening" in PDX led by Top Chef contestant Doug Adams and Jen Quist, bar and restaurant developer extraordinaire! We can't wait to return to the full brick and mortar (SQUEEEEE!)

Portland Farmers Market. As one of the largest farmers markets I've encountered, there was no shortage of produce, meat, baked goods and dairy. It was refreshing to head to a market and be able to buy our whole dinner from start to finish.

Sauvie Island and Wildlife Area. Who knew you could lounge on a sandy beach just 30 minutes from Portland? Sauvie Island is the largest island along the Columbia River beloved by locals and out-of-towners alike. The beach allows dogs and picnicking - two things closest to my heart which is why it's hard to admit this was my first trip after spending four years in Portland for college.

Three peas in a pod. Beyond love for Katie and Kris - my cheeks still hurt from smiling! Please come visit us STAT!

Summer Edit '17

WOVEN MODERN PENDANT // This Laika Pendant by Blu Dot will illuminate your summer house in style or is sure to create a beachy vibe at home.

MATCHA LIFESTYLE BOOK // After our whirlwind trip to Japan, I'm always looking for ways to incorporate their culture into our day-to-day. This book Matcha: A Lifestyle Guide might be the trick as I already have the magical green powder on my monthly Amazon delivery docket.

EMBROIDERED MULES // Kate Spade is back to hitting home runs and I am oohing and aahing over their Monteclaire Embroidered Mules - please get on my feet!!

LIP BALM // I'm obsessed with everything Sisley Paris and already have a few of their Phyto-Lip Twist Balms in my makeup line up but this color looks perfectly fresh for summer.

MIDI DRESS // This Mara Hoffman tropical sheath dress is divine and sure to be the envy of beach goers or folks on the street.

CLUTCH // For the past three years Cult Gaia's Ark bag has been carefully stored in my closet. This year, I'm leaving all fear I'll break this bag behind and taking it out on the town. No doubt, it's quickly become my go-to sidekick!

BIG TASSELS // I may finally abandon my faithful studs for these All Things Mochi Hallu Earrings - watch out!

STRESS OIL // I recently discovered Tata Harper and all her non-toxic natural glory! Although it's my first product purchase, this All Natural Aromatic Stress Treatment is heaven and does some serious work when I start to feel nervous.

Weekday Musings

EATING // Convivial's Pickled Rockfish. It may sound unappetizing but this little dish packs bright
color and flavor in a photo perfect plate. We'll soon be making our second trip this month for Father's Day and I cannot wait to savor this tasty morsel... AGAIN!

HOME*WORK // Not a lot of work on the house to report here but our weekly blooms have been outstanding these last few weeks. I mean these peonies?! Holy buckets! We planted a few varieties of this sought out flower in our backyard but what gives?  The plant keeps growing bigger and bigger every year but no buds.  Thank goodness for the new Whole Foods on H Street... but there is a reason people call that place "Whole Paycheck" - yikes!

CRUSHING ON // Ice, ice baby! Now that the temperature is climbing around the 90s, I am loving iced coffee and tea. There is no way you'll catch me with a hot cup of joe until October!

READING // Ever since I laid eyes on Ashley Longshore's Teddy Roosevelt pop art, I have been o-b-s-e-s-s-e-d. I inquired about purchasing a painting but her work is a little too rich for my blood (i.e. $10K and above!) So I settled on purchasing her autobiography You Don't Look Fat, You Look Crazy.  You guys!  This book is seriously fun and should be on your bookshelf!  Her unapologetic truths are refreshing and I found out that my hometown (Missoula, MT) was where she started painting!! Not convinced yet?  Check out her Instagram here, she's a boat load of AWESOME!

THANKFUL FOR // My sister. We all have our people and mine is my sister Mikal. After fighting like cats and dogs when we were younger, a detente was reached years ago and we've never looked back. All hostility evaporated and she is now one of my very best friends - my confidant, the person who knows how to make me smile and the person I look up to. I'm counting down the days until we're reunited again... And I CANNOT wait until one day we are neighbors!!

THINKING ABOUT // Women. In a group text, my GF sent this well written op-ed about feminism in America. I've now read the piece three times as it makes me think about my own discomfort with the word feminism. In 2017 are we still struggling to be equal to men? The answer is yes and from here on out, I know I am going to make a better effort to help my fellow ladies succeed. Who's with me?! #letsgetfemale

WATCHING // We just procured tickets to the Moth Story Slam at Howard Theatre next Monday and I am excited! Not only is a show at Howard Theatre on my 101 list but the Moth is seriously amazing. It's so inspiring to watch real people tell true stories live without notes. That takes major guts to get up on that stage and share something personal.  My goodness - I tip my hat to you storytellers!

WEARING // Tata Harper's Stress Relief Treatment oil on repeat. Every time I dab a little bit of this oil on my palms and neck and breathe deep, I swear my whole body shifts from tense to quiet.  I've never been into scented oil but this little miracle worker has made me a convert. And it smells so fresh too - no patchouli stench here! I SWEAR!

* Image inspiration, beat the heat at your local pool this weekend!!
